When Talad Nam Dumnernsaduak or Dumnernsaduak Floating Market was revealed to the world as new tourist destination for the first time in 1967 or more than 40 years ago, the place was clumped with small row-boat loaded with various kinds of commodities necessary for living by venders dressed in dark tone cloths, common dress of orchardist, worn “ngob” or a hat that made from palm leaves, rowing the boat around trading with each other.
Nowadays, this floating market is renown all over the world and has become one of the must be visited place.
In fact, Talad Nam Dumnernsaduak or Dumnernsaduak Floating Market was more than hundred years old. It has become a trading place for the villagers who lives around that area since King RAMA IV of Bangkok ordered Dumnernsaduak canal to be dug. It was because this area had no road to access to other area and most of the people around here used boat to communicate in daily life. This Dumnernsaduak canal connects with Tha Jean river and Mae Glong river together. It spent two years to finish the job with man labor. In the beginning, this market was the center for people who lived around the area, commuted by boat only, to trade agriculture products from their plantation, orchard , garden, farm and paddy field. But at present, this Dumnernsaduak Floating Market is both land and float market which means the trading is done on canal bank and in the canal.
The name “Dumnernsaduak” means “Easy to Travel” since the canal was dug primarily for the purpose of easing the travel between Tha Jean river and Mae Glong river. But somehow it has been changed. It has become a trading place for vendors and merchants. It has become a meeting point for hundreds of boat to sell not only commodities but also all kind of merchandises, such as agriculture products, foods, sweets, local handicrafts to manufacturing goods from Bangkok and other provinces around the country. For tourists who visiting this place, it is a spectacular sight to see hundreds of boats full with merchandises clumping in the canal trading. It is unquestionable an amazing place and still has conserved the spirit of genuine floating market which is different from the recently organized floating market in many other provinces.
